Pakistan is currently suffering historically bad flooding, with 10 people already having died due to the monsoons (rainy season) and 33 million Pakistanis being affected by the disaster.

A total of 72 districts across the country have declared this a “calamity hit”, putting 6.4 million people in immediate need of emergency assistance.

But that’s not all! Damage to nearly 3,500 km of roads and 149 bridges has limited the ability of people to escape to safer areas, as well as affected the delivery of relief aid to people in need.

Fortunately, with the help of our partners, we are already responding to the situation on the ground by delivering lifesaving food and shelter.

You can help us save precious lives by donating a food or shelter package now.

So what caused this unprecedented tragedy?

While Pakistan has a long history of flooding, this one has end up being far worse than what has ever came before.

The UN chief has described the current flooding in Pakistan as a “monsoon on steroids”, and it is due to the growing instability of our climate.

South Asia is a hotspot for climate change induced disasters, with people there 15 times more likely to die from the climate crisis. Other countries in the region, like Bangladesh and Myanmar, also face harsh and deadly consequences for global warming.

Even though Pakistan emits less than 1% of all global emissions (pollution), it is in the top ten countries most likely to be affected by climate change.

People here in the West may often brush off the effects of climate change or say it’s not as bad as people make it out to be.

But when you look at the map showing which countries are most likely to be affected by climate change, you can see why some may not believe the severity of the situation..

The real consequences of climate change are out of sight and out of mind for many of us.

But this situation in Pakistan is another reminder that thousands of our brothers and sisters die every single year from climate change induced disasters and millions are affected.

And it will keep getting worse and worse.

Now we may not be able to influence our governments to take charge and stand up to the corporations that are destroying our planet

But we can do something to save lives today
